As a grown up have you ever missed being a child?. Have you ever been in a situation where you wish that your mother was there, or you find your self thinking, If my mom was here everything would be alright. The importance of a good childhood is so important in the personal development of any individual mind. Preparing the child for the world to receive him and to handle the good and bad that he will encounter, should be the main focus of the parents. Encouraging your children and praising them when they do good is a sign of a good parent. Teaching the child good values and moral codes also speaks of the home from which he/she comes from. Enabling your child and covering up their wrong doings, can be detrimental not only for the child but also for the parent, siblings and society, by doing this the parent is weakening the childs true potential. Children live what they learn. There are the exceptions to the rules however, and there are the few and far in between that realize from a young age that the home training that they may have received or what they have witnessed as children was not the correct thing and so they try to follow another direction, a direction of good.

When I was growing up my father whipped me all the time, as it is common in Jamaica, although I believe his was way overboard due to his Ganja smoking habit. I was not a child that gave problems, yet he found a reason to beat me for basically nothing. I now have my own children and I do not beat them, I have never. This is not to say that I do not believe in disciplining the child by sparing the whip, I do, but not to the point of abuse. I chose not to hit my children because I was mindful of my own situation with my father while growing up, and I wanted to be the best parent that I could possibly be. Instead I focused on protecting their minds, their emotional state. I knew that I was important to keep then well grounded, especially since I was a single parent and the dad was a dead beat.

I knew the my guardian angels were right there with me helping and guiding me in growing these children and I know I did a great job. I asked the questions in the first sentence because, when life comes hard at times, it is normal to want to revert, in your mind of course, to when you were younger and Mama sooth and comforted you. At least I do!. I know that it sounds silly, do not deny this and say that you haven’t ever felt this way before because it is a normal feeling albeit a little odd.

This is why I believe it is important for parents, people who choose to bring a life into this world to make that child upbringing as loving, and as normal as possible. We as parents or those that are hoping to become one some day should grow that child up with so much love and care, express to them their worth and keep abuse in all form away from them, so when they become adults and they review their lives from when they were young they find comfort, joy and peace.
