It has 250 members, 12 of whom are chosen by the president for their competence in the fields of art, literature, science social services. These members are known as the nominated members. The remaining 238 members are elected by the states and union territories by the method of indirect elections. The members serve for a period of 6 years, with one-third of the members retiring every 2 years. Thus, the Rajya Sabha is a permanent body and is never dissolved. The vice-president of India is the ex-officio chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
