Why do we need to build large dams? List four reasons. What are their demerits?
Dams are built for a number of reasons:
- To control the flow of water so as to elinimate flooding.
- To make electricity using hydroelectric power.
- For navigation
- For recreation
- For preventing fire
- To supply water
DE-MERITS:
1.Social problems:Because it displaces large no.of peasants and tribes without adequate compensation or rehabilitation.
2.Economic problems:Because they swallow up huge amounts of public money without the generation of proportionate benefits.
3.Environment Problems:Because they contribute enormously deforestation and the loss of biological diversities.
