Why do we need a standard meridian for India? Why was 82 ° 30’E selected as the Standard Meridian of India?

Solution:

We need a standard meridian for India because due to its vast longitudinal extent there is a time lag of two hours from  Gujarat to  Arunachal Pradesh. So, to make the time same at all places and avoid confusion Standard Meridian has been chosen which passes through the middle of India.
In order to avoid the difficulty in selecting the longitudes at the eastern or western ends as Standard meridians and to have a uniform time across the country 82 30 E has been chosen as the Standard Meridian as it passes through the middle of India reducing such differences.
