The following points may help you for answering your question :

a. We have a parliamentary form of government where people elect the legislature  and it is  from the legislature , the executive emerges.
b. The Prime Minister so selected is basically the leader of the party which has secured majority in the elections. 
. The ruling party  among itself elect their leader who  becomes the Prime Minister of the state, however, most of the time parties nominate their Prime ministerial candidates before elections.

c. The President invites the leader of the majority party or a coalition to form the government. However, if no party or a coalition has secured a majority , it is here the President exercises his/her discretion to invite a person whom he thinks can muster majority support in the Lok Sabha to form the government. The President may then ask the newly appointed Prime Minister to prove his majority on the floor of the house within a specified time.
