WHAT IS THE USE OF THE PREPOSITION " TOWARDS " ?

A preposition tells about the relation between words in a sentence. It is placed before or pre-positioned in relation to a noun. The words 'toward' and 'towards' are the spelling variation of the same word, with the same meaning and usage. They can be used as a preposition to show 'place' or movement.

Example: He walked toward his house.

 The pilot walked towards the aircraft.

 The comet sped towards the planet.

The word 'to' can often replace 'towards', but 'towards' shows movement and can not replace 'to'.

Example:

He ran towards the finish line. 

He ran to the finish line.('to' can replace 'towards')

He walks to his office daily. 

He walks towards his office daily. (meaning of the second sentence has changed with the use of 'towards' as it does not show the completed action of reaching the office)
