Sebaceous glands are small glands present throughout the skin in human body (except soles and palms) and generally exist near the hair follicles. The oil substance secreted by these glands is called as sebum. It is rich in lipids and wax.
Function of sebum is:
1: It lubricates the skin and protect it from drying.
2: It keeps the hair follicles free from dust and germs and debris.
3: It prevents the growth of microorganisms on skin by serving as antimicrobial agent.
