TISCO was able to expand steel production during the First World War because the British imports of iron and steel into India declined and the market for the steel manufactured by it increased. During the war, the steel produced in Britain had to meet the demands of the war. As a result, the imports of British steel into India declined dramatically. At this time, the Indian Railways turned to TISCO for the supply of rails. As the war dragged on for several years, TISCO had to produce shells and carriage wheels for the war. To meet the demands of the war, TISCO had to expand its capacity and extend the size of its factory. By 1919, the colonial government was buying 90 per cent of the steel manufactured by TISCO.

*The Tata Iron and Steel industry was established on the river subarnarekha. The conducive environmental conditions helped TISCO to set up its industry.

*Besides it was set up at an opportune time during the first world war.

*Due to this the steel manufactured in Britain now had to meet the demands of the war in Europe.

*So the import of steel to India declined dramatically and the Indian railways turned to TISCO for the production of rails.

*Not only this TISCO now had to meet the demands of war by producing carriage wheels and shells.

*Thus the TISCO became the largest industry within the British Empire and the colonial government was buying 90% of the steel produced in the company.

TISCO was started at a very opportune time, right before the world war started. As all iron and steel in England was being used to make war material, nothing was being imported to India. As a result the officials looked upon TISCO for iron to build railways. Also, very soon TISCO was ordered to make war materials for the English for world war.
