the sultans did not control hinterland and were dependent on trades and tributes .why ?

The Delhi Sultans could not control the hinterland beyond large cities because means of transportation and communication were extremely primitive. Hence, they usually left the hinterland relatively free to run its own affairs. The only thing they demanded was that the hinterland should pay them taxes and tributes as a token symbol of authority.
