How to find number of nodal plane in dyz orbital ? How to do such question if asked for other orbital please explain giving some example. I know the formulae of total nodes and radial nodes but those did not work in such question.

Dear Student,

A nodal plane is defined as the region in an orbital where the wave function is zero and hence the probability of finding an electron is zero.

For an orbital,

Number of radial nodes = n - l -1
Number of nodal planes(angular nodes) = l
Total number of nodes = n - 1

For dyz orbital, l=azimuthal quantum number = 2.

So, dyz orbital has 2 nodal planes, which are dxz and dxy planes.

The boundary surfaces and nodal planes and cones for 3d atomic orbitals.

Hope it helps.
