Explain the civilising mission of the French in Vietnam.
Please answer it is very very urgently needed in 1hour.

Dear Student,

The following points may help you:

a. The French policy-makers wanted to educate the people of Vietnam, because they considered education as one way to civilize the “natives".  They were driven by the idea of a ‘Civilizing Mission’, and considered it their duty to bring modern ideas to the colony and to reshape its culture and also to have an educated labour force.

b.They considered it as their duty to civilize the natives, to introduce modern ideas and values. Thus, The French in order to civilize the natives, introduced modern education and dismantled the traditional education system in Vietnam. They followed the policy of discrimination against the Vietnamese students, of deliberately failing students. The education system glorified French rule.

c. The French text books glorified french rule and ridiculed Vietnamese culture. For example, Tonkin free school, students were taught science, hygiene and French, other than the common subjects. The students were not only made to attend these classes but they were asked to sport modern looks too so as to look Western. A typical example of this was that Vietnamese were asked to cut off their long hair and adopt a short hair cut which was absolutely against their culture.. Looking modern glorified French rule.

d. French tried to create modern Vietnam with modern architecture and engineering skills .
