Explain the causes of battle of plassey? What is the historical importance of the battle?

Dear Student,

The famous Battle of Plassey was fought between Siraj-ud-Daulah-the last independent nawab of Bengal and Robert Clive- British army commander of East India Company on June 23, 1757.
The causes of the battle are as follows:
  • In 1717, the British were granted Dastaks which they misused as a guise to avoid paying taxes.
  • They started the enhancement of weaponry in Fort Williams and increased its fortification with the aim of expanding their empire.
  • British continuously interfered in the internal affairs of the Nawab which the independent nawabs disliked.
It was important because:
  • It made way for the complete rule of British over Bengal and eventually whole of India.
  • Marked the beginning of the economic exploitation of  India.

When Sirajuddaulah became the nawab of Bengal the East India Company were hoping for a ruler who would listen to their needs. They got in connection with one of Sirajuddaulah's enemies but negotiations failed. Sirajuddaulah came to know and locked up the warehouse of the EIC with 30,000 soldiers. This is the cause of Battle of Plassey.

The historical importance of the battle is because one of Sirajuddaulah's commanders, Mir Jafar, didn't fight the war because he was promised to become the nawab of Bengal by Robert Clive (EIC commander of forces)
