Economic development of a country depends on which factors and what is the role of democracy in it ?
Economic development of a country depends on the following factors:
a. Political Will- The government needs makes heavy investment in health and education facilities and must have is a political will to effectively implement it the policies will bear no results.
b. Effective implementation mechanism- Merely framing policies is not enough, problem lies in the implementation process. Most of the programmes fail to reach the targeted beneficiaries as there is no effective mechanism to keep a track of the policy. It require effective control and regulation and periodic checks.
c Combating corruption- Corruption has rather been the main hindrance in the implementation process, involvement of the middlemen, red tapism in the bureaucratic machinery has severely affected implementation mechanism.
d. Eliminating Socio-Economic inequalities- Our society is characterized by grave social and economic inequalities where people face discrimination and injustice and are deprived of the benefits. It is partially due to ignorance and partially because the weaker section continue to remain educationally and economically backward.
e. Increase Level of Awareness- It is important to create awareness about governments policies and programmes through local bodies and village communities.
The role of democracy:
b. Though, democracy establishes equality both politically, socially and economically formally or in principle there is a lot that needs to done in reality where people lack still economic and social equality and continue to face discrimination.
c. Majority of the population continue to live in a condition of abject poverty struggling to manage even there basic necessities of life.
d. Modern democracies are capitalist democracies where few accumulate wealth, and rest are deprived of fair share. It is the capitalist class which influences decision making.
e. Democracies track record with regard to economic development has not been very impressive. It is believed political instability, delays in decision making along with factors like population growth, poverty leads to economic underdevelopment.
