Manysocial theories have been at the root of social movements in Indiaafter independence. These include theories related to socialism,feminism and environmentalism. Socialist movements have strived tosecure economic justice for backward classes. The ideal of socialismhas been recognised in the preamble of the Constitution of India aswell. Dalits and tribals have participated in socio-politicalmovements to acquire political power based on the ideas of socialreforms movements of nineteenth and twentieth century. These groupshad been exploited from ancient time and are now endeavouring toclaim their place in society. Feminism seeks to redefine the role ofwomen in society and bring it on equal footing with that of men.Feminist movements have struggled against stereotypes and madeefforts to secure the rights of women at home and workplace with somedegree of success. Environmental movements have combinedenvironmental and social concerns of people which have beenovershadowed by developmental concerns. The Gandhian ideals ofpeaceful agitation and simplistic living have their association withmost of these movements. Environmentalism has recently acquired aprominent focus among social concerns with problems like climatechange and its attendant costs, particularly for developingcountries. Major socio-environmental movements in India are theChipko movement, the Appiko movement, Narmada Bachao Andolan andSilent Valley conservation.
