The following were the reasons behind the success of the British in India.
1. Political instability in India: During the 18th century, there was a lot of political instability in India. The Mughal empire had weakened and there was a lot of infighting between various kingdoms in India. The British were able to take advantage of this political instability.
2. Technological superiority of the British in the form of more advanced weapons which enabled them to win battles against Indian rulers even with smaller armies.
3. Technological superiority was due to the industrial revolution in Britain.
4. Divide and rule policy under which the British took advantage of divisions within India society by forming strategic alliances.
