A well of diameter 7m is dug 22.5m deep. The earth taken out is spread evenly all around it to a width of 10.5 m to form an embarkment.Find the height of the embarkment.

$Given Diameter of the well=7m radius of the well= \frac{d i a m e t e r}{2} = \frac{7}{2} = 3.5 m Depth of the well=22.5m volume of the earth taken out on digging the well = π r^{2} h = π \times {(3.5)}^{2} \times 22.5 = π \times 3.5 \times 3.5 \times 22.5 = 275.625 π m^{3} width (w)=10.5m Outer radius (R) = r + w = 3.5 + 10.5 = 14 m Let h be the height of the embarkment R=14m r=3.5 m Volume of earth used in making the embarkment = π (R^{2} - r^{2}) h = π ((14)^{2} - (3.5)^{2}) \times h = π (196 - 12.25) h =183.75 π h m^{3} we know that Volume of earth used in making the embarkment = volume of earth on digging out the well \Rightarrow 183.75 π h = 275.625 π \Rightarrow h = \frac{275.625}{183.75} \Rightarrow h = 1.5 m ∴ Height of the embarkment=1.5m$
