Mr. M. Hamel did not fit into this picture of an ideal teacher because he was not frank with his students. He did not interact with them and never attempted to know if they had any doubts regarding any topic. He asked them to water his plants and gave them a day off so that he could go fishing. He did not guide them properly and never paid heed to their academic development like a responsible teacher. It was only on the last day of school that he realised the fact that he had failed as a teacher when Franz could not recite a lesson on participle. The way he taught his students on the last day was what he should have practised always. Franz was scared to confess his shortcomings and this meant that M. Hamel had failed to serve as an ideal teacher.
