a survey shows that 63% of americans like cheese whereas 76% like apples.If x% of americans like both cheese and apples,find the value of x.

rn

plz explain in very a easy step.....

let us take % as no. of people.

Now no.of americans who like cheese , n(c) =63

no.of americans who like apples ,n(a)=76

and total no. of people , n(cUa)=100  (since 100%)

you need to find the intersection of the sets cheese and apples

which is equal to n(a)+n(c)-n(cUa)=63+76-100=39

hence X=39

AS PER QUESTION

TOTAL NUMBER OF AMERICANS(C U A) = 100

AMERICANS LIKE CHEESE (C)= 63

AMERICANS LIKE APPLES (A)= 76

AMERICANS LIKE BOTH CHEESE AND APPLES(C ∩ A )= X

NOW,

AS PER SET THEORY

n(C U A) = n(A) + n(C) - n(C ∩ A)

 100 = 76 + 63 - X

 100 = 139 - X

 X = 139 - 100

 X = 39

 Let the people who like cheese and apple be C and A respectively.

Given that,

n(C)= 63%

n(A) =76%

n(C П )=x%

now,

n(C  A) = n(C)+n(A)-n(C П A)

100%= 63%+76%-x%

x%= 39%

 x= 39
