A very famous story by Leo Tolstoy had been titled 'A Lost Opportunity'. Here is a summary of the story.

This fable talks about two families who were very loving neighbours of each other. They are respectful of each other. However, after the head of the families change the relationship shared between both also change. Ivan and Gavryl become the main member of their respective families and small arguments led to outright accusations of theft. The two families engage in small disputes which grow over the years. Suggestions provided by Ivan''s father is ignored and verbal fights turn into physical fights. The climax occurs when Gavryl burns down Ivan's house and a spark from their house burns Ivan's house in turn. Both the houses burn into ashes. The story ends with the two families returning a respectful temperament with each other as they rebuild their houses.
