write a note on ozone layer

The ozone layer is a layer rich in ozone gas present in the earth's atmosphere. It lies between 10-40 km in the stratosphere layer of atmosphere. The atmosphere is very thin at polar regions as compared to equatorial regions. Thus the thickness of ozone layer is not uniform everywhere and varies from region to region. This layer absorbs most of the harmful UV radiation from the sun, thus protecting people on the earth. These UV radiations can cause skin cancer, genetic mutations and other harmful ailments. They also have harmful effect on vegetation. So the ozone layers acts as a protective cover for the earth. However, over the last few years, the ozone layer has depleted in may regions resulting in the formation of ozone holes. The use of chloroflorocarbons in aerosols and refrigerators, and their subsequent escape into the atmosphere, is blamed for making holes in the ozone layer over Antarctica and Arctic. This has resulted in harmful consequences, for plants, animals and human beings.

The ozone layer is a layer in Earth's atmosphere which contains relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3). This layer absorbs 97–99% of the Sun's high frequency ultraviolet light, which is damaging to life on Earth. It is mainly located in the lower portion of the stratosphere from approximately 13 to 40 kilometres (8.1 to 25 mi) above Earth, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically

Between 1928 and 1958 Dobson established a worldwide network of ozone monitoring stations which continues to operate today. The "Dobson unit", a convenient measure of the columnar density of ozone overhead, is named in his honor.

  OR
The ozone layer" refers to the ozone within stratosphere, where over 90% of the earth's ozone resides. Ozone is an irritating, corrosive, colorless gas with a smell something like burning electrical wiring. In fact, ozone is easily produced by any high-voltage electrical arc (spark plugs, Van de Graaff generators, Tesla coils, arc welders). Each molecule of ozone has three oxygen atoms and is produced when oxygen molecules (O2) are broken up by energetic electrons or high energy radiation.
