With the help of an example of a country, point out the significance of the Constitution.

Solution-
While all democratic countries are likely to have a Constitution, it is not necessary that all countries that have a Constitution are democratic. There can be several purposes for drafting a constitution, they are:

1.To provide a set of basic rules that allow for minimal coordination amongst members of society. For example in India many linguistic ,ethnic , religious groups live in harmony only because of the constitution because the rule book provides the minorities with some speacial facilities that help them live conveniently with majority.
2.To specify who has the power to make decisions in a society. It decides how the government will be constituted. Like we can see in case of India where constitution prohibits the excessive or irregular use of power by Governments who work under the purview of the limitations set by constitution.

3.To set some limits on what a government can impose on its citizens. These limits are fundamental in the sense that government may never trespass on them. For example Indian constitution also sets fundamental duties that needs to be followed by every citizen and the constitution also set some rules on citizens that help them follow rules of the land smoothly.
4.To enable the government to fulfil the aspirations of a society and create conditions for a just society.
Therefore, it can be understood that the constitution allows coordination and assurance. On the other hand, it can limit the powers of the government.
