Why were wars of succession common during Mughal period?

Wars of succession were very common during the Mughal period because the Mughals did not have well defined rules of succession. Instead, it was considered normal among the Mughals for all prospective successors to struggle among themselves to show who was the fittest to rule. Wars of succession, therefore, were a natural consequence.
