Why the chromosome number has reduced to half in daughter cells in process of meiosis?

Dear student, meiosis is a reduction division, which means the daughter cells receive half the number of chromosomes from the parent cells. This is because when fertilization occurs, the two gametic cells (1 from each parent) fuse together to form the zygote. During fertilization the original ploidy (diploid in case of humans ) is restored. If the daughter cells don't receive half the number of chromosomes , then on fertilization the zygote will become tetraploid. Thus it is important that the number of chromosomes received in each daughter cell if half that of the parent in case of meiosis to restore the normal ploidy in the progeny. Regards.

Meiosis is also called reduction division. Here, homologous pair of chromosomes separate in anaphase I. So, reduction of chromosome number by half occurs in meiosis I.

Meiosis takes place mainly in gametocytes. From a diploid cell of the parent, haploid gametes are produced. During fertilization (fusion of two gametes in sexual reproduction), two haploid gametes fuse to give a diploid zygote giving same number of chromosomes as in the parents.. Therefore, the chromosome number of the species is conserved.
