why is fundamental rights has often been referred to as conscience of indian contitution?

Fundamental rights are referred to as the conscience of the Indian constitution because the fundamental rights embody the aim of the constitution to establish India as a free and democratic country in which every citizen is equal. The fundamental rights guarantee equality and freedom to citizens without which democracy will be impossible in India. Hence, without the fundamental rights, the constitution of India would not have been able to establish democracy in the country.
