why does sun appear red during sunrise and sunset

The red colour in the sky at sunset (and sunrise) is due to an effect called Rayleigh scattering. There is a similar form of scattering called Mie scattering which is responsible for the white colour of clouds.

Particles in our atmosphere that are approximately the same size as the wavelength of visible light cause the white light from the sun to scatter and split into individual components. Oxygen and Nitrogen (the main components of our atmosphere) scatter violet and blue light due to their small size. This is why the sky appears to be blue in the day time, especially at midday when the Sun is closest to us.

During sunrise and sunset the distance that the light has to travel from the Sun to an observer is at its greatest. This means the a large amount of blue and violet light has been scattered so the light that is recieved by an observer is mostly of a longer wavelength and therefore appears to be read.

 1) The temperature at noon is warmer than at sunrise and sunset

2) The sun itself is red at sunrise and sunset, but is yellow at noon; it has nothing to do with the effect of the atmosphere

3) Red light is easily transmitted through the air since its frequency is the lowest. At noon, sunlight travels through the least amount of atmosphere with little scattering of high-frequency light to the surface.

4) Red light is easily scattered through the air since its frequency is the lowest. At noon, sunlight travels through the least amount of atmosphere with little transmission of high-frequency light to the surface.

5) the sun is colder at sunrise and sunset than at noon.

at sunrise or sunset the sun is at the horizon. during the travelling of lite in the atmsphere, all the colours esp blue are scattered beynd our visual range bt red predominantly do not. there fore sun is red

the SUN appears red during sunset and sunrise because at these times, sun is farthest from us and light has to travel the longest distance. particles in our atmosphere are as the same size as the light particles have. therefore, they scatter the light particles. so, the colours of light having highest wavelength like red, orange, yellow reach our eyes and others, due to their short wavelength scatter.
REGARDS!!!
HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!!!  ^.^

The sun and the surrounding sky appear red at sunrise and at sunset because at that time most of the blue colour present in sunlight has been scattered out and away from our line of sight, leaving behind mainly red colour in the direct sunlight beam that reaches our eyes.

Because of the tyndal effect , sun appear red at the time of sunrise and sunset.
During sunrise and sunset , the light has to pass a longer path ,so more scattering , so most of the blue shades scatter away and the sun seems to be red to us...

Hope this helped you..:)

VIBGYOR-Colors appear when white light scatter. The particles in atmosphere are more suitable for scaterring blue light containing VIB of VIBGYOR( while we see these color combines and give blue color ). In the other colours red having the most wavelength pass in our eye making the sun appear red.

when the sun is at the horizon level, we see it red because, when the sun is there, the distance is very large in between, and the suns light travels through two medium.
the medium near the sun is lighter and some is thicker at the outer side of it.
it has to go a long distance.this makes most of the light of shorter wavelength scatter and the larger particles travel to our eyes.
tats why we see it red.

hope it helps!!!

I just want to add that amount of scattering is directly proportional to 1/(wavelength)4 .

due to atmospheric refraction...nd scattering of light

It appears red at sunrise and sunset as at the time of sunrise and sunset the sun is at the horizon and the sunlight has to travel more distance, as sunlight enters the atmosphere of earth most of the colours of the spectrum scatters and the left out colours are orange and red.thus it appears orangish or reddish at sunrise or sunset

The colour of the sky appears red at sunrise or sunset becoz at that time sun is at the horizon and sunlight gets longer path to travel from atmosphere , red light scatter and unscattered light reaches to the earth.

THE SUN AND THE SURROUNDING SKY APPEAR RED AT AT SUNRISE AND SUNSET BECAUSE AT THAT TIME THE BLUE COLOUR PRESENT HAS BEEN SCATTERED OUT AND AWAY FROM OUR LINE OF SIGHT, LEAVING BEHIND MAINLY RED COLUR IN THE DIRECT SUNLIGHT BEAM THAT REACHES OUR EYES.

Red colour has the highest wavelength and blue and it's shades have the least. At noon, the sun is at the top and the light rays coming from it have to travel less distance in the atmosphere of earth. Hence, all colours get scattered very less, even blue. In evening, the sun is not at the top and the light rays from sun have to travel more distance in the earth's atmosphere. The difference is nearly of 150kms. In this long run, blue colour and all its shades get scattered the most whereas red get scattered the least. That's why we see the sun reddish in the evening.

Because sun eats tomato sauce

During sunrise and sunset, the rays have to travel a larger part of the atmosphere because they are very close to the horizon. Therefore, light other than red is mostly scattered away. Most of the red light, which is the least scattered, enters our eyes. Hence, the sun and the sky appear red.
