why does anne jungrelate the story of a man from udipi

Anees Jung's objective in narrating the account by a man from Udipi was to highlight the perpetual state of poverty in which the barefoot ragpickers grew up. The man from Udipi used to go to school past an old temple as a young boy where his father was a priest. He would stop briefly at the temple and pray for a pair of shoes. Thirty years later when he came back to his town, he had shoes and prayed again so that he would not lose them. Times had changed and the sons of priests now wore shoes but the conditions of the ragpickers would remain the same. The ragpickers still went barefoot.
