Self-pollinated crops also show inbreeding depression. The ill effects of inbreeding depression are outweighed by the productivity caused by inbreeding. Self-pollination helps in retaining the good characters of a selective superior variety for a long time. They have evolved so that only the plants that could survive inbreeding without inbreeding depression did survive.
