At some places rulers had to flee as they were threatened by British. An attempt of mutiny was also in favour because if they won the empire would be again able to maintain a strong hold over India.

The Mughal emperor, Bahadur shah Zafar, agreed to support the rebels because:

1. Lord Hastings stopped the customs of presenting gifts to the Mughal emperor and later his name was removed from the coins.
​2. Lord Dalhousie even made a plan to deprive him of his fort and kingship.
​3. The British wanted to rule and thus used deceiving ways to do this. This also turned the Muslims against the British.
