Dear student,

Since Franz had started late for school, he was in great dread of being scolded. Moreover, the bright and warm weather, the chirping of the birds and the drilling of Prussian soldiers tempted Franz to run away and spend the day out of doors. 

However, his inner strength helped him to resist this temptation.

Franz had hoped to get to his desk without being seen and counted on the general commotion of the classroom to gain him a quiet passage but that day, the class happened to be as quiet as a Sunday morning. 
Franz had to open the door and walk in before everybody. The thought of doing so was a daunting prospect for him because as usual he was late for class. He had seen his classmates seated already in their places and M.Hamel walking up and down with his terrible ruler under his arm. Therefore, he had no choice but to brave the class and draw attention to his entry in order to get to his desk as he happened to be the last one in.
