Why are most fern confined to wet area?

Ferns ( pteridophytes)  require cool, damp, shady places to grow. They require moisture for effective fertilisation of gametes. Moreover , they are spore producing plants  which also require water for germination. Requirement of water for such processes limits the  spread of living pteridophytes to narrow geographical regions which are wet areas.
