An informal sector is an unorganised sector of the economy. It includes all enterprises that hire less than 10 workers, except farming and self employment ventures. As against this, a formal sector includes all those enterprises that hires 10 or more than 10 workers.

1. A worker in a hotel which has7 hired workers and 3 family members will be regarded as working in informal sector. This is because although the hotel has a total of 10 workers but out of this only 7 are hired workers. Thus, such a hotel will be considered to be in the informal sector.

2. The owner of a textile shop employing 9 members will be regarded as working in informal sector. This is because he hires only 9 workers (that is, less than 10) in his shop.

3. Assuming that the electricity office hires more than 10 workers, a clerk working in the electricity office will be regarded as working in formal sector.
