Which is stable O2 2+ or O2 2-, And Why ?

Bond order of O22- ion = [Nb-Na] / 2

= [10-8] / 2

= 1

Bond order in O22+ = [10-4] / 2= 3

Bond order also indicates the stability of the bond. The higher the bond order, the more electrons holding the atoms together, and therefore the greater the stability.

So, O22+ is more stable than O22- ion because of high bond order of O22+ ion.

O2 ^ 2+ is more stable as its bond order is more than O2 ^ 2-  ( as v know bnd order is directiolly propostional to stability)

 FOR ;;O2^2- = bond order is Nb - Na /2 =10-8/2= 1

but for O2^2+ = bond order= Nb- NA/2= 10-4/2=3

3 is greater dan 1 therefore b.o of +2 is greater dan -2 and thus +2 is more stable !
