what truth dawned upon him as the jet sprang ten thousand feet?

The truth that dawned upon the poet when the jet sprang ten thousand feet was that it was clear to him why the country had cities were the rivers ran and why the valleys were populated. The logic of geography made it clear that man was attracted to those lands which had water because it made more sense to set up cities there. Cities require a constant source of water supply which the rivers could provide naturally.
