what is the significance of negative energy of electrons in the orbit?

The energy of an electron in the orbit of an atom is negative. It shows that electron is bound to the nucleus.Greater the value of negative energy, more tightly the electron is bound to the nucleus.Binding energy of a electron is E= - (13.6/n^2).  the negative sign shows that the electron and nucleus form a bound system the energy of electron is minimum in first orbit and the electron  has 0 energy when it is at infinite distance from the nucleus .
