what is the moral of the story ?

The story celebrates the Christmas spirit of goodwill and generosity. It upholds the virtue of peace and togetherness. In the letter that the narrator comes across, Connie's husband Jim, describes a Christmas evening which brought both the English and German camps together. They forgot that they were enemies and ended up playing football together. Similarly, the narrator's visit to Connie, momentarily lightens up Connie's life. She mistakes the narrator for her husband and believes that he has come  back to her after a long time. The narrator's compassion thus becomes the source of someone else's happiness. The story therefore suggests that we must never lose touch of our humanity.
