A diploid Megaspore mother cell undergoes meiotic cell division and so forms 4 haploid megaspores,out of which three of them degenerates and only one well functioning megaspore remains which further forms the embryo sac(female gametophye)this process is often refered to as megasporogenisis and this plays a crucial rule...because without the formation of female gametophyte fertilisation does not occurs,it is in the embryo sac where fertilisation takes place and so the seed is formed.
