Pili and fimbriae are composed of the same protein called pilin. They have many similarities and even these terms can be used interchangeably. The basic difference that can be spelt out is that fimbriae are used for attachment to surfaces for colonization while pili are used to transfer genetic material during sexual reproduction of bacteria.
