What is the difference between mansabdars & jagirdars?

The term mansabdar refers to an individual who holds a mansab, meaning a position or rank. The mansabdar brought his cavalrymen, for review, got them registered, their horses branded and then received money to pay them as salary.

Mansabdars received their salaries as revenue assignments called jagirs which were somewhat like iqtas.

To bring about greater order in the system of military administration , akbar introduced the mansabdari system [ a system which consisted of a hierarchy if offices in AD 1574.

Every cicil or military official {mansabdar} was given a jagir or a piece of land according to his zat or ank.

The mansabdars drew their salaries from the revenue of the land. The mansabdars had to maintain a certain number of horses for the emperor's use. The size of the jagir depended on the zat and the savar [ introduced to define how many cavalry a military commander was expected to maintain ].

Hope this helps you
