A lake is a still body of water which is surrounded by land on all sides. It can be natural or man-made.

River, on the other hand, is a flowing water body which mainly flows in one direction. Rivers are generally natural .

The main difference between  a rriver and a lake is the water movement .A river is a water body which often move in one direction. if you observe a river , it basically moves along the banks of the river.On the other hand lakes are immobile.
