what is the difference between fresh water and potable water?

fresh water is the water which we get from melting of snow on mountain tops and rain fall. During the whole coarse,the water passes through the plains and valleys and become polluted and can't be consumed by human beings directly while on the contrary the potable water is the water which can be consumed by humans directly.
