what is organisation structure ?

Organisational Structure basically refers to the framework within which an organisation performs its functions. That is, it defines the working relationships, job positions and level of authority in an organisation. An organisational structure ensures correlation and coordination among the human efforts and helps in achieving the organisational objectives effectively and efficiently.

The organisational structure are of the following two types.

  1. Divisional Structure- Under didisional structure, various activities in the organisation are separated in different divisions on the basis of products that the organisation deals in. Each division has its own divisional manager who supervises the whole unit. Further, each division is divided in various departments on the basis of its functions (such as, production, sales and advertising).
  2. Functional Structure- Under a functional structure, activities or work of similar nature are grouped together. Each group functions as a separate department and specialises in its work.
