what is land degradation?what are the measures to control land degradation?

The continuous use of land over a long period of time without taking appropriate measure to conserve and manage it is called land degradation.

There are many ways to solve the problems of land degradation. Afforestation and proper management of grazing can help to some extent. Planting of shelter belts of plants, control on over grazing, stabilisation of sand dunes by growing thorny bushes are some of the methods to check land degradation. Proper management of waste lands, control of mining activities, proper discharge and disposal of industrial effluents and wastes after treatment can reduce land and water degradation in industrial and suburban areas.

Land Degradation: When land becomes barren, infertile for cultivation, it is called land degradation.

Reasons for Land Degradation

  Overgrazing by animals

  Deforestation

  Over mining and quarrying

Over irrigation resulting in water logging leading to salinity and alkalinity.

Mineral processing, like grinding of limestone for cement industry and calcite and soapstone for ceramic industries, generates heavy amount of dust and pollutes atmosphere. It later settles down on land and reduces infiltration of water into the soil besides degrading land and surface water.

Discharge of industrial effluents into water bodies and on land.

Measures to Control Land Degradation

  Terrace farming

  Construction of dams

  Afforestation

  Preparation of shelter belts

  Control on overgrazing by animals

Stabilization of sand dunes by growing thorny bushes.

Moisture conservation by bunding and contour ploughing

  Weed Control

  Proper management of waste land.

Control on mining and quarrying activities

  Proper discharge of industrial waste/effluents.

The above two answers must have hepled you a lot already. Some more information on land degradation is noted:

Land degradation is a human induced or natural process which negatively affects the land to function effectively within an ecosystem, by accepting, storing and recycling water, energy and nutrients. It is alsothe decline in soil quality caused by its improper use, usually for agricultural, pastural, industrial or urban purposes.

1)Environmental education to the people which Will promote land management and decrease land degradation.2)Radio active materials should be damped deep in the ground so as to prevent upper soil layer to be effected

Land degradation is a process in which the value of the biophysical enviroment is affected by a combination of human induced processes acting upon the land . It is viewed as any change or disturbance to the land perceived to be deleterious or undesirable .Natural hazards are excluded as a cause ;however human activities can indirectly affect phenomena such as floods and bush fires .This is considered to be an important topic of the 21st century due to the implications land degradation has upon agronomic productivity ,the enviroment ,and its effects food security .It is estimated that upto 40% of the world's agricultural land is seriously degraded

And other cause is to say like soil erosion in which soil get eroded and to be unfertile this are two measure of land degradation
  • 2
The degradation of soil, land become wasteland is known as land degradation
  • 3
The continous use of land without caring the fertility of the soil is called land degredation.

land degradation refers to the degradation of the soil quality making it infertile.
measures to control land degradation:
1) planting trees
2) reducing overgrazing by animals
3) preventing soil erosion
4) using different cropping/farming methods like crop rotation, inter cropping, terrace farming in hilly areas and contour ploughing
5) reducing the use of fertilisers and pesticides
6) practicing mulching
7) proper discharge of wastes

Land degradation?is a process in which the value of the?biophysical environment?is affected by a combination of?human-induced processes?acting upon the land.[1]?It is viewed as any change or?disturbance?to the land perceived to be deleterious or undesirable.[2]Natural hazards?are excluded as a cause; however human activities can indirectly affect phenomena such as floods and bush fires.

This is considered to be an important topic of the?21st century?due to the implications land degradation has upon?agronomic productivity, the environment, and its effects on?food security.[3]?It is estimated that up to 40% of the world's agricultural land is seriously degraded.[4]

There are four main ways of looking at land degradation and its impact on the environment around it:

A temporary or permanent decline in the?productive capacity?of the land. This can be seen through a loss of?biomass, a loss of actual productivity or in potential productivity, or a loss or change in?vegetative cover?and?soil nutrients.

Action in the land's capacity to provide resources for human livelihoods. This can be measured from a base line of past land use.

Loss of?biodiversity: A loss of range of species or ecosystem complexity as a decline in the environmental quality.

Shifting ecological risk: increased vulnerability of the environment or people to destruction or crisis. This is measured through a base line in the form of pre-existing risk of crisis or destruction.

A problem with defining land degradation is that what one group of people might view as degradation, others might view as a benefit or opportunity. For example, planting?crops?at a location with heavy?rainfall?and steep slopes would create scientific and environmental concern regarding the risk of?soil erosion by water, yet farmers could view the location as a favourable one for high?crop yields.[5]

Waste land or barren land is considered as land degradation. The following measures to control degradation are=1.afforestation over deforested area,2.Proper managementof grazing on permanent pastures,3.planting of shelter belt,4.Control on mining activities,5.Proper discharge and disposal of industrial effluents after treatment.

When we say land degradation its all about the loss of the fertile soil through natural and human induced activities. The measure to control land degradation are: 1.reduce the use of chemical fertilizer. 2.build walls behind the land which r situated at steep slope. 3.plant saplings around and near the land .
