What is bawri

Bawris are deep step-wells built into the ground. These were built by the people of olden times for storing rain water. This was an old method of rainwater harvesting. When it rains, the rain water accumulates in these tanks and because thses tanks are very deep, the water does not evaporate very easily and this water can be used during the times of water shortage.

Bawri was the traditional way of collecting water. Many places in India have an age old practice of water storage and water recharge like the bawris. With the time the bawris fell into disuse and garbage started piling in these reservoirs. However because of the acute water shortage, people in these areas have had to rethink. The bawris are being revived. Today the situation is that inspite of scanty rains these places are managing their water needs well.
