What is basic principle behind the systematic analysis of cations and group separation?  Explain.

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query.

Cation analysis is done using the method of selective precipitation as particular group of cations react with a particular reagent and gets precipitated. Selective precipitation involves the addition of a carefully selected reagent to an aqueous mixture of ions, resulting in the precipitation of one or more of the ions, while leaving the rest in solution. Once each ion is isolated, its identity can be confirmed by using a chemical reaction specific to that ion. This analysis should always be done systematically and according to the prescribed order, because if a salt contains more than one cation, then they interfere each other during analysis and we do not get the desired results. So, the analysis should be done in proper order so that all the cations are precipitated one by one without their interference with each other.
