What is Authority and responsibility relationship?

Authority refers to the right of an individual to take decision and get the work done from others while responsibility is an obligation of an individual to perform the assigned task.
Authority and responsibility go hand in hand. A person having authority should bear responsibility of his work, similarly a person having responsibility must have the necessary authority to perform assigned work. Authority arises from formal position while responsibility arises from delegated authority. Authority must always equal responsibility. Authority flows downwards while responsibility flows upwards.
