What is a-amylase test? (Here 'a' stands for alpha)

Alpha amylase test is performed to measure the content of the enzyme alpha amylase in blood. It is used to detect the extent of damage to pancreas or salivary glands. In blood, normally low content of this enzyme is found. Alpha amylase is an enzyme that breaks/hydrolyses alpha bonds of large polysaccharides, such as starch and glycogen, yielding glucose and maltose. It is majorly present in humans and other mammals and also is found in seeds.
