What happens when water bodies become acidic

Dear student,

The main pollutants responsible for acid deposition are sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. It affects mainly the acidity of freshwater bodies.

Effects of increased acidity on aquatic systems:
1.Eutrophication result in excessive growth of phytoplankton and mosses. When algae die, decomposition of organic substances use oxygen. This results in depletion of oxygen in water. Algal bloom blocks penetration of of oxygen, light and heat.Hence the organisms below the surface of the water.
2.Interfere with fish reproductive cycle.
3.Acidity causes clogging of gills, lower body weight and smaller size which make them less competent.
Fish population begin to disappear.

WHEN WATER BODIES BECOME ACIDIC ALGAE FORMS ON THE POND/RIVER, WHEN THESE DIE BACTERIA AND FUNGI EAT THEM IN THIS PROCESS THEY COMSUME OXGEN WHICH LEADS TO DECREASED CONCENTRATION OF O2 IN THE WATER BODIES

formation of algae start and then use the oxygen for then that affect the other  water bodies organisms.

#The organisms under the water bodies would lose their lives.
#water to consume would be not available.
