What happened to the shifting cultivators?

Shifting cultivators were forced to leave their occupation under the colonial rule and to practice settled agriculture. As most of the land was occupied, they diddn't get fertile soil to grow crops. Their access to the forest was restricted and all the forest produce which where earlier in the hands of them shifted to the hands of the East India Company.
