What encouraged the policy of Apartheid in South Africa?

When National Party gained power in South Africa in elections of 1948, the all-white government immediately began enforcing existing policies of racial segregation under a system of legislation called apartheid.
Apartheid : Former political system in South Africa based on the colour of skin in which Black people were forced to live away from White people.
