The inner wall of the small intestine has millions of finger-like projections or folds called villi (singular : villus). Each villus has a network of a thin and small blood vessels called capillary close to its surface. These villi give the inner walls of the small intestine a very large surface area. The surface of the villi absorbs the digested food materials and passes them through the blood capillaries.
